People and Activities in the Northern Arctic Ecozone

Canada's Northern Arctic has about 29,000 people living in it, because most of the population is in Nunavut. Canada's Northern Arctic Ecozone, is one of the least populated places on Earth.

The Inuit have occupied this region for thousands of years, and the land has been recently returned to them on April 1, 1999, when Nunavut became a territory and the Inuit once again had the right to self govern themselves, and take care of their own education and justice systems. In fact of the 29,000 people that live in the Northen Arctic Region, 80% of them are Inuit. They speak in the language Inuktitut. And they mainly live off of Hunting and Fishing. The prices in stores to buy milk or eggs, is almost double the price, than what you would buy it for in Toronto, Ontario, because of the distance to ship it, and the shipping costs involved

Hunting, Trapping, and Fishing, are the Inuit's normal way of life. This is how they lived thousands of years ago, and this is how they are living in the 21st century. This all adds, to their self-esteem, healthy lifestyle, and the characteristic of being independant people. Residents of this region are also involved in Mining many different kinds of minerals that are located in this region. Mainly to the west of Nunavut, is where many minerals are located, such as copper, and oil. A lot of residents of Nunavut, also contribute to construction, different kinds of services, and government activities.

It is estimated that the Northern Arctic Ecozone contains about 59% of all of Canada's oild resources and about 48% of Canada's gas resources. Apparently tourisn is also quite large to the economy, it generates about $12 million for businesses in the Norhtern Arctic. This was recorded in 1993.
